In comparison to some of the world’s major capitals, Beijing is pretty safe, “the 2015 Crime and Safety Report published by the US Department of State’s Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), the most common incidents are petty crimes such as pickpocketing, credit card fraud, and other scams,” according to this beijingkids article. However, there are incidents that remind everyone low crime doesn’t mean no crime.
Last week, a young woman was taken hostage by a delivery man from her home in Tuanjiehu. Had she known self-defense, would the outcome have been different? Yes. No. Maybe. The truth is that learning self-defense, like everything else, does not carry a 100 percent guarantee that nothing bad will happen, it just gives options to avoid and getting out of dangerous situations.
This summer, Krav Maga Beijing will be hosting a four-part self-defense workshop specially designed for women and teenage girls (ages 15 and up). Every Saturday from July 13 to August 13 in the afternoons from 1-2.30pm, participants will be taught how to deal with possible threats that are bigger and stronger through specifically designed techniques and strategies. According to the Krav Maga’s Beijing website, “this 4-session basic course covers everything from developing awareness and avoidance, to fighting back and improving your chances of surviving a violent encounter.”
Krav Maga has been a popular choice for people both men and women who want to learn how to get out of dangerous situations involving assailant(s). Earlier this year former beijingkids managing editor, Sijia Chen, interviewed Krav Maga Global China instructors Von Ng and Yonina Chan to get to know more about self-defense.
The topics to be covered during the workshop are:
– Striking and turning on aggression
– Developing the self-defense mindset
– Avoidance and awareness of danger situations
– Dealing with attackers who are bigger and stronger than you
– Dealing with grabs and pulls (someone controlling you)
– Dealing with choke-type attacks
– Dealing with low-light situations
– And much more…
