Handa goes on a trip to see her best friend Akeyo, and decides to bring her a gift of fruit. But when the animals see what she’s carrying on her head, they can’t resist helping themselves…
Eileen Brown’s book Handa’s Surprise is a favorite in Early Years classrooms, and now a British theater company is bringing it to the Beijing stage. Little Angel Theatre use a mix of puppetry, live music, and song to recreate the colors and lively humor of the story.
“This show is suitable for ages 2 to 6,” Janice Chan from Tong Playroom told us. “The show is set in the round, and the audience are invited to sit at the edge of a floor mat. Each show only can cater for around 80 audience members. It’s going to be an intimate family theater format.”
After the performance there will be a 20 minute workshop, when the children will have a chance to try out the African drums for themselves.
And what is Handa’s surprise? Well, you’ll have to go along to the show to find out!
Handa’s Surprise plays at Beijing Fenglan Theatre in Haidian district on May 10-13, and then at M Theatre, Chaoyang district, on May 18-20. For more information and to buy tickets scan the QR code below.
