Favorite Books Come to Life on Stage
Three much-loved books are coming to Beijing this month, in theatrical form. For little ones, Guess How Much I Love You at the Dayin Theatre (May 25-28) brings to life the story of Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare, as they compete to see who loves the other more. Older children will enjoy the songs, the puppet animals, and the humor in Handa’s Surprise (TONG Playroom, May 10-13 and 18-20). Meanwhile, the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center has an offering which will appeal to teens and adults: the award-winning dramatization of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon’s bestselling book about a teenager with autism (May 24-27).
Money and Travel Prizes for GREAT English Teachers
Do you know a GREAT English teacher? If so, they could win RMB 4,000, or even a trip to the UK! The competition is run by the British Council, as part of the “English is GREAT” campaign to promote the study of the language, and it’s open to all teachers of Chinese nationality teaching English at private or public schools, or training centers. Twelve monthly finalists will be selected, and then an overall winner will get a four-week study visit to the UK. To find out more, check out the website: chinadaily.com.cn/teacheraward/
Catkin Attack
Spring is here, and with it the seasonal plague of catkins. Although the snow-like flurries and drifts can be fun, they’re a health hazard, and were blamed last year for a fire in which 80 buses were destroyed. The city authorities have launched a new bid to tackle the problem, by sterilizing the trees, which produce excess pollen because there are twice as many female trees as males. We can only hope it’s more successful than the previous attempt to change the trees’ sex by grafting male branches onto female trees.
Schools Connect with the Community
May is a big month for Beijing’s international schools, with many of them holding important events. Beijing City International School (BCIS) and Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) both hold community days, on May 5 and May 12 respectively. May 12 is also Founder’s Day for Dulwich College Beijing (DCB), while on May 18 Western Academy of Beijing has a doubleheader: a Jazz in the Park concert, and the student-led Identity Film Festival.
