Rejoice, all ye dog lovers, as today (Aug 26) is when we celebrate a special occasion reserved to Man’s Best Friend – Dog Appreciation Day.
Dog Appreciation Day, also called as Dog Day (not to be confused with the dog days of summer, but this unofficial holiday happens in the summer as well), was first held in 2004 to honor dogs for all the things they do for us – by being always there when we need companions, or just by being cute and lovely. This unofficial holiday also aims to raise awareness that many dogs, as well as other animals, are left homeless and need help.
In Beijing, there are several community groups on WeChat that share information about stray dogs that need rescue, as well as organizations that look for volunteers to help with finding foster families or temporary shelters. Most of these abandoned animals lie beyond Beijing’s dense business and residential districts and further outside the Fourth Ring Road.
Our friends from the International Center for Veterinary Services run one of the facilities in town that help with animal rescues. ICVS treats these poor little fellows until they are ready to be adopted by a forever loving family. Here are some of the puppies waiting for their new best friends – it might be you or your family!

Feifei (8 months old, medium-sized mutt)
A local rescuer took Feifei to vets after seeing a WeChat message which showed the homeless puppy with bad injuries and unable to stand or walk. One month later, the rescuer moved Feifei to a foster family. He has recovered very well and is getting stronger day by day.
Medical notes: Feifei is fully dewormed and vaccinated.
Puppy (7 months old, large breed)
Puppy was brought to ICVS where he was treated for a skin infection. He has since recovered and is very healthy, loving, sweet, and affectionate! Since Puppy is a large breed dog, he needs to live outside the Fifth Ring Road where he can be legally registered. He would love a backyard so he can run around for exercise.
Medical notes: Puppy is a healthy male dog and has been vaccinated and dewormed.
Xiao Bai (around 1 year old, small breed)
Sweet and friendly little Xiao Bai was brought to ICVS by a rescuer. Xiao Bai had been living in Fragrant Hills and been fed by the local residents. She is very friendly and loving.
Medical notes: Xiao Bai is fully vaccinated, dewormed, treated for fleas/ticks and already spayed by ICVS.
Ginger (1 year, 8 months old, small breed)
Ginger was born in an empty field in Shunyi in Dec 2016. A local rescuer took him and his siblings in, and found him a nice Chinese foster family in Aug 2017. After 9 happy months, the family moved to Australia and gave Ginger back to the rescuer. Now Ginger is living in a boarding facility and is ready for his forever adoption family.
Medical notes: Ginger is fully dewormed, vaccinated and neutered.
