March is a special month that highlights the important role of women and the contributions they have made to society. Many countries celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, while the US and the UK regard the month as Women’s History Month.
Here in Beijing, there are a couple of activities that commemorate this holiday, from seminars to dinners. But the popular Rumble in the Jumble pop-up market aims to take the occasion further.
The Rumble team is known for gathering together makers and artisans from the international community for a weekend extravaganza with creative monthly themes that go well with what’s fresh and what’s happening in the community.
Their March theme, “Femme Festival”, honors the beauty, strength, and power within women. Charlotte White, or the “Mistress of Jumble”, said they came up with the concept since this event is mainly organized by women. “So many of our vendors are strong, awesome, creative women from all different backgrounds, [and]we wanted that to be our concept. ‘Femme Festival’ just seemed like a fun, alliterative way of putting it.”
Aside from Rumble’s signature community bookstall, and the vendors and artisans who will sell all things creative and artistic, this edition also features activity providers including:
– Black Rabbit Tattoo who will do personalized tattoos on site;
– A pop-up poet called Boriqua in Beijing, writing customized poetry on the spot;
– And embroiderer Emilie 工dea who will mend your clothing items for free in her “Surgery for Broken Clothing” session.
The market’s official WeChat group chat has also begun introducing participating vendors before the big day on March 9. Charity organizations such as the Migrant Children’s Foundation and Springsations will join the market as well.
“Of course, you don’t have to BE a woman to join us for the celebration. You just have to love and respect us,” the Rumble team said.
Femme Festival takes place at Modernista in Baochao Hutong, Gulou, on March 9. For more details or if you wish to join the official market group chat, contact White on WeChat (ID: CharLouise)
