English often becomes, by default, the common language of the international community in Beijing. But there are scores of languages represented in the city, and a new puppet show offers the chance for your kids to gain exposure to another world language with a long history and profound culture.
Si Loin, Si Haut is a French phrase meaning “So Far, So High” (and it’s perhaps a reflection of how this great language is neglected that many listings have misspelled it as “Si Lion, Si Haut”!) It’s not a story about a lion, but about a dog called Tungsten and a bird called Coppernickel, The pair share short, hilarious adventures suitable for children aged 3 and over. The show, which has delighted kids across France, is being presented in French and Chinese, though it’s simple enough to be enjoyed by kids who understand neither language. It’s been brought to Beijing as part of Festival Croisements, an annual celebration of French arts and culture. Puppetry has a long history in France. Guignol, named after a silk worker who was a notorious character in early 19th century Lyon, features in many shows, which include local dialects, topical humor and audience participation. Puppets therefore form a natural point of cultural contact with China, which has its own traditions of shadow puppetry.
