There’s no two ways around it, pregnancy is a struggle. A beautiful, miraculous, transcendent, and uncharted struggle. Even if you’re on your second or third child, the uniqueness of each journey can quickly leave expecting mothers in unexpected territory, which, if you’re an expat mom, takes on a profoundly literal meaning. That’s why it’s invaluable to have a strong support system and a community who can get you through all the challenges and blessings that come with giving life.
As a mother of four, a doula, and a birth trauma rewind practitioner, Sarah Lam has both personal and professional experience which she shares with other mothers during free, informal monthly meet-ups at her home in Shunyi. The next two will be held on Sep 25 and Oct 17 from 10am to noon. Due to privacy concerns, Lam does not make her address publicly available, but will be happy to provide you with it if you choose to participate. She can be added on WeChat using the QR code on the flyer below.
Speaking to beijingkids, Lam opened up about her own experience with pregnancy, and why she decided to start this support group.
“I have four sons ranging from 15 to 4 years. I had my second son whilst living overseas and at times it was lonely and scary, navigating something so life changing without the support that would have been available to me in my home country. I went on to suffer postnatal depression for his first year, and feel that maybe with more access to support, it may not have been as bad. After moving back to the UK, I trained to become a Doula, a professional birth companion who offers practical and emotional support, as I felt passionate about supporting families through pregnancy and beyond. And after moving to Beijing, I wanted to set up a support network for other new mums to be able to understand what’s happening to their bodies during this vulnerable and life changing time.”
