There is something uniquely confounding about music. It possesses a transcendent quality that moves us in ways very few things can. And while we’re all familiar with that profound, ethereal quality music maintains, few of us may know about some of the other seemingly magical benefits hidden inside music’s properties.
For instance, a study conducted in 2016 looked at music therapy for premature babies and found that “music therapy helped stabilize premature newborns’ breathing rate during their time in the neonatal intensive care unit.”
What’s more, a number of other studies have shown that “music can help to reduce pain … resulting from several conditions, like osteoarthritis, disc problems, or rheumatoid arthritis, by up to 21 percent.” And that, “Music therapy is increasingly used in hospitals to reduce the need for medication during childbirth, or to decrease postoperative pain and complement the use of anesthesia during surgery.”
In a more general sense, it’s well documented that music training and education in younger years helps to promote neural plasticity, or “the ability of learning experiences to change the brain chemically and physically,” with the results being that the “benefit [of music training]transfers to speech, language, emotion, and general auditory processing.”
If you or your child have ever considered trying your hand, or voice, at music training, but are yet to take the plunge, Crescendo Music Training Studio is offering a number of free trial lessons on various instruments from Oct 25-27.
