Originating from Nanjing University in 1993, Double Eleven (双十一, Shuāng shíyī), or Singles’ Day (光棍节,Guānggùn Jié), was originally a day to celebrate being single because the date of November 11 (11/11) consists of four ones, apparently resembling multiple single people alone. Now it is the largest e-commerce day in the world, on which you can get a lot of discounts. Last year, Alibaba made $30.8 billion worth of sales in the 24-hour shopping event. This shopping festival regularly beats the sales volume of Black Friday in the U.S. as well as any other global e-commerce event.
