The kids have been at home for days now and keeping them entertained is a full-time job. While it’s great that kids are getting back to the basics when it comes to toys, one classic childhood toy has always made me cringe a bit – Play-doh.
Play-doh’s super fun and can entertain kids for hours, but nowadays whenever I see a pre-loved jar of Play-doh only one thing goes through my mind: germs.
Think about the number of times that ball of Play-doh has fallen on the floor, the number of surfaces it has touched, the sneeze droplets the kids have folded in there without realizing, or the amount of pet hair and dust that’s in that colorful little ball of Play-doh. Not to mention, not being able to completely separate all the colors after the kids have made their Play-doh cheeseburger.
A quick search online and it turns out that playdough is super easy to make. So easy, in fact, that you can toss them (along with the germs) out after each play.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of flour (whatever kind you have on hand)
- ¼ cup of salt
- 1 Tbsp cream of tartar (optional)
- ½ cup of warm water
- 5 drops of natural food coloring
Instructions
- Mix together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
- Mix together ½ cup of warm water with a few drops of food coloring.
- Slowly pour the water into the flour mixture, stirring as you pour. Stir until combined, then knead with your hands until the flour is completely absorbed. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour until it doesn’t stick at all.
- Repeat the process for whichever colors you want to make.
Notes
- Mixing the food coloring with the water before combining with the dry ingredients allows you to blend them by stirring, without staining your hands.
- To add a touch of sparkle, you can also try adding some glitter (about 1 tbsp to each color batch).
