Jun 1 is International Children’s Day. But wait, isn’t every day some sort of Children’s Day in its own way?
While nowadays Children’s Day is celebrated with kids parties, school performances, and family-friendly dining deals all around town, the holiday actually has a history behind it unlike more recent holidays like May 20 (Chinese Valentine’s Day) or Nov 11 (Single’s Day) which were created mainly by retailers. In China, some companies even give parents the day off to spend with their kids but whether you’ll be able to take Monday off depends entirely on your company’s HR policy.
Children’s Day dates back to 1950 and is more seriously known as the International Day for Protection of Children established by the Women’s International Democratic Federation in Moscow. The holiday was established to encourage countries around the world to spend a day together and raise awareness of the welfare of children around the world.
Depending on what country you’re from, Children’s Day might be celebrated on different days. In most parts of the world Children’s Day is celebrated on Jun 1, but the official United Nations World Children’s Day is celebrated on Nov 20.
While this year’s Children’s Day events aren’t as action-packed as previous years due to COVID-19 restrictions, there’s still plenty of options around town to make the day special for kids.
