I’m thrilled to see the amount of Halloween brunches happening this year and it’s so fun that there’s a Halloween party on every corner. But when it comes to doing something the whole family will love, it’s hard to choose one event over another without knowing if it will be a bust. Will the pumpkin carving just be sad, the trick or treating too competitive, or the locals at the bar too rowdy for a family fun day? And let’s face it — how many times do kids need to trick or treat before their dental bills are higher than your rent?
That’s why I was happy to find these two events on Halloween day that aren’t just hit or miss themed parties, but ways to enjoy the day together in interesting ways.
First up is Qianmen Kitchen by BSK’s Halloween celebration:
I saw cookies, my husband saw movies, and my kids saw pumpkins! What I like about this event is that there are multiple things to do, including movies to watch while enjoying Qianmen Kitchen by BSK‘s delicious offerings (lunch or dinner), and trick or treating in the up and coming hutong neighborhood of Xi Xing Long Jie. It’s an eatery we want to try, in a neighborhood we want to see, with activities our kids are sure to like. Done.
“But what about Halloween night,” you ask? Isn’t Halloween really an evening celebration? Well, yes, but now you’re getting into Dia de los Muertos territory, and that’s where our favorite pop-up marketplace Rumble in the Jumble comes into play! Except that this month, it’s Mercado de los Muertos!
I love bringing my kids to these bazaars. There’s always delicious food to try, new friends to meet, crafty vendors to inspire creativity, and just generally great energy. We adored Rumble’s Dino Market last September and the invasion of puppies at Aotu Space two weeks ago, so I trust no one more to introduce Dia de los Muertos to my kids! A huge perk of all of these bazaars is that you get to visit cool parts of town you may never have set a foot in otherwise. Grab dinner at a restaurant in the hutongs before browsing the jewelry and handmade goods, complete with … alpaca? Rumbles are always a fun adventure for the family.
