Nothing about 2020 is as expected, and winter break continues that trend. We got curious about how Beijing families are navigating this vacation, and whether they’ll brave some travel outside of our city or stay here and make the most of it. BJK: How do you usually spend the holidays?
RR: We usually travel to the Philippines during the holidays or sometimes to other tropical countries like Singapore because we miss the warm weather, and of course the warmth of having your family near, especially during this Christmas season.
BJK: What will you do this year?
RR: We will probably have a staycation in a hot spring hotel in Beijing to somehow feel warm in the cold winter.
BJK: Are you excited or disappointed about it?
RR: A bit disappointed that we cannot travel outside Beijing, but more excited because we’re spending this holiday with the family and I think that’s enough reason to celebrate it with joy and be thankful.
BJK: How do your family members feel about it?
RR: They are kind of sad, especially the three kids who always look forward to where we’re going every holiday vacation, but they understand that we’re in an unusual situation right now.
BJK: Do you have any anxieties about the holidays or travel in general?
RR: Yes, we think it’s not that safe to travel outside the country right now especially this holiday season. There’s a lot of things to consider… like health checks and quarantine, so we believe it’s too risky to travel, especially when you have kids during this time.
