Choosing the perfect school for your child is no simple feat, and Beijing has no shortage of international schools. But before you’re overwhelmed by the gorgeous campuses, high-tech classrooms, and dedicated teachers, keep in mind who you’re really there for – your child. Choosing the right school doesn’t mean finding the most expensive, the largest, or the most high-tech. The “best” international school in Beijing is the one that fits your child’s needs and interests.
At every open house you’ll be introduced to the facilities and beliefs of the school. But be prepared – don’t just listen to what the schools have to say. Talk to parents whose children attend the school as well, and ask the questions that will give insight into where the school really stands.
Educational Philosophy
Are they hands-on or do they promote exploratory independent learning? What’s the approach that their teachers take? Is it more traditional where the teachers lecture, or do they encourage students to be immersed in the learning process?
Extracurricular Activities
Don’t just focus on the academics. Look into what extracurriculars are offered at the school. If your child already has their own interests, inquire about those and see how well they’re sup-ported at the school. If they’ve yet to discover their extracurricular passions, does the school offer a wide variety for them to explore?
The “Typical Student”
While there’s nothing wrong with a school that highlights specific students who’ve gone to accomplish extraordinary achievements, not every student will be as accomplished. Find out what their “typical student” is like in terms of test scores, extracurriculars, and leadership roles. Evaluate the student body as a whole, rather than the few shining stars.
Does your kid like the school?
While this seems like a no-brainer, it’s necessary to remind yourself that ultimately, you’re looking for a school for your child. They’re the ones who’ll be spending time there and building their lives around that school. While your opinion as a parent is important, so is theirs.
Ask questions
Don’t be afraid to put the school admissions staff on the spot. That’s what they’re there for. Ask the questions that really concern you. What measures are the schools taking to ensure that their student’s mental health is treated as importantly as their academic achievements? What’s their policy on bullying? Make your own list and also take our Covid-19 Protocols checklist with you.
Talk to the community
Don’t underestimate the power of the Beijing community. Teachers and parents or current students are one of your greatest resource when you want to find the inside scoop on a school.
