Recently, a teacher posted in a WeChat group that he had confiscated an alcoholic beverage from one of his students on campus that morning. However, after a chat with the student, he realized that they had no idea there was actually alcohol in the drink. In other words, the student simply thought it was a new trendy soda.
Needless to say, it was one of those “uhh…” moments, when you suddenly realize that the packaging and branding of sodas and alcoholic beverages are becoming increasingly indistinguishable from one another. Similarly, a quick trip to your local convenience store proves just how much of this booze-in-sheep’s-clothing is actually on the market today.
All of which got us wondering: Just how easy is it for kids to purchase alcohol in Beijing? We sent 7-year-old Malcolm, armed with a secret camera, to find out.
I can’t help but feel that sometimes the packaging is not only confusing for kids but grown-ups as well. To prove my point, I compiled a list of drinks available at most shops around town. Scan the QR code below and see if you can identify which ones contain alcohol, then share your results with us in the comments!
