Sustainability Sunday: Introducing BOOMI, China’s Eco-Conscious Platform

Have you heard of BOOMI yet? I discovered this brand platform via a virtual market WeChat group last Christmas while searching for good gifts that won’t end up in a landfill after New Year’s. The name caught my attention because in the native language of Indonesia, where I had just moved from, “Bumi” means earth. And, as it happens, this is exactly what inspired the founders of BOOMI.

Emmanuel Dean and Miguel Boy started BOOMI with the idea of building something simple but impactful. “What’s the first and last thing you use every single day?” they thought, “A toothbrush!” Hence, bamboo toothbrushes were the first product BOOMI offered. Today, BOOMI lists more than 50 local brands and businesses covering sustainability needs, information, and services.

Another thing I really appreciate about BOOMI is their partnership with Shanghai Roots & Shoots’ Forest Initiative, and their pledge to donate 8.8 percent of their revenue to planting trees in Inner Mongolia.
