Beijing’s an urban jungle, and in any jungle, we need tools to survive and thrive. As urban jungle dwellers, we’ve managed to blend practicality with style, resulting in the modern bag. Here, form meets function, and what looks stylish and fashionable on the outside contains all our essential survival tools on the inside. Inspired by this, we ask expat parents each week, “What’s in your bag?” and get insights into which essentials they keep on hand when out and about in the capital city.
I’m Dawn, but everyone calls me Nix! A Cali girl in Beijing for six years, where I’ve been working, learning, and thriving. I am also fortunate to be one of the lucky ones who met their soulmate, here too! I am an environmental activist and natural skin care advocate, which is why I started Oil of the Phoenix. I wanted to develop economical skincare for people like me. Someone who wants to know what they are putting on their skin and makes a more positive environmental impact, no matter how small.
I don’t always carry a bag, but when I do, it’s only my essentials. (I’d rather not carry a bag at all, but the system refuses to make large pockets in women’s clothing.) A black bag goes with everything! My bag is typically fashionable, simple, and durable.
In my bag, you will find my Health Blend and Mask Magnet kits! These are my must-haves here in Beijing! Aromatherapy is a wonderful way to heal. These blends were created for Focus (green), Headaches (red), and Energy (orange), made by me! My Mask Magnet is a diffuser on the go! A few drops of lavender or peppermint to start my day in a calm and relaxing way. Bye, bye, garlic, and coffee-infused train rides…
Next is my canteen! I honestly refused to buy water in America but here, I am reminded that not every country has that luxury. I usually fill up my canteen before I leave the house, and grab water where I can on the way.
Then, my everyday toiletries bag contains floss, lotion, lip balm, and a pen. I don’t normally carry lipstick, as it is usually only seen by… the inside of my mask.
That brings us to my reusable masks and grocery bag. I think masks are like T-shirts and give us another chance to express ourselves. Remember we are all in the same fight in this pandemic. Mask up!
Lastly, my vice, sunglasses. If you know me, you have probably never seen me without a pair on or nearby. The sun can be bright, and I don’t want to get wrinkles from squinting so much. Plus, they are a lovely touch to any outfit.
