Goodbye warmth of last week and hello another Beijing cold wave! Temperatures hit 3 degrees Celsius on Monday and may crawl up to low double digits in the mid-week, but those chilling winds have us thinking we’d prefer to stay in and stay warm. So we rustled up our top choices for kid-friendly cafes, where you and the kiddos can sip on a hot drink and stay entertained.
African Coffee
This one may be past the 5th ring road but that just means it’s got way more space to offer! Sporting African-themed decorations and artistic statues of animals from the Savannah, African Coffee is part-gallery and part-cafe. There’s so much to admire on its walls and floors that it’s highly unlikely you’ll have to whip out the electronics to keep the kids in place while you desperately guzzle that last sip of coffee. They also have a huge outdoor field and outdoor playground, which may be fun for a quick nip in winter but will definitely be great for summer! Their “Black Coal” cake – which is shaped like the little coal creatures from the acclaimed Miyazaki film Spirited Away – latte, and South African Rooiboos tea are among their must-trys.

Ours Premium Kids Cafe 树朵家亲子餐厅
Located east of Chaoyang Park and just around the corner from Joy City, this place quite literally falls under the category of kids cafes. Targeted towards children below the age of 6 and their accompanying adults, Ours Premium Kids Cafe provides a safe and hygienic environment for crawlers and walkers to play, all while parents sit and eat in peace. A three-hour ticket for one adult and child, including a choice of food for both, starts from RMB 218 on the weekdays. Recommendations here go to the spaghetti bolognese, sweet potato fries, pumpkin soup, and coffee.

Ms.Kimo Cafe
A jingkids editorial team favorite when it comes to kids’ cafes is Kimo Cafe. Managing Editor Mina Yan frequents the outlet in Solana Mall while my son and I used to haunt the one in Landgent Space 3 (which is the weirdest mall name ever). Both outlets are spick-and-span, which is why it tops our list, and staff are super attentive to messes. If you are willing, they even play with your kids! The food there is also more than decent, with a great selection of kids’ and even babies’ meals. My kid’s choice was always the lasagne, fried chicken pieces, and a fresh juice. For adults, their salads are fresh and huge. Admission for two hours costs RMB 128 on weekdays for one adult and child, while babies below 1-year-old are free!

Lilliput
One more for the kids cafe category would be Lilliput, another franchise with multiple locations around the city so you can just pick the one closest to you. Lilllput even looks quite similar to Kimo in their sleek black and white interiors, and operates in pretty much the same way, except for one small but perhaps significant difference – Lilliput has a mini carousel! There’s a special voucher on Dianping for one adult and child to play and have tea on a weekday for RMB 198. Their recommended menu offerings include the Mexican chicken burrito, pentagon pizza, and Lillycino for kids.
