Beijing’s an urban jungle, and in any jungle, we need tools to survive and thrive. As urban jungle dwellers, we’ve managed to blend practicality with style, resulting in the modern bag. Here, form meets function, and what looks stylish and fashionable on the outside contains all our essential survival tools on the inside. Inspired by this, we ask expats each week, “What’s in your bag?” and get insights into which essentials they keep on hand when out and about in the capital city.
This is Valiant Wang – aka Val for short – born in Michigan, US, to parents Shu and Jacob. The family came to Beijing for a grandparent visit two years ago, and have since stayed on due to the pandemic. Val was subsequently enrolled at Beijing City International School (BCIS) where he is currently in pre-kindergarten. He just turned 5 this October and celebrated the occasion with a MeLand birthday party, which you can read all about here.
Val’s mother Shu was tired of lugging around a childish kid’s bag for her son whenever they went out, so she decided to upgrade to this small space print Gucci tote for children. Turns out, Val loves it just as much as she does, if not more! Watch Val introduce us to the contents of his Gucci bag in the video below or keep reading:
“Inside my bag I got peach tissues. Lulu chocolate cookies that are very good. A bag of clothes if I pee my pants *gesturing to a zip-loc bag containing toiletries*. This is my something that I need to blow in my nose (saline nose spray), some lotion, some anti-itching balm, some boo-boos if I’m hurt (band-aids). A stain pen, a lip balm, a sanitizer to sanitize. And the last thing is the wipes.”
Shu adds, “We make sure that all the brands are baby-safe. There’s also a breath spray that helps to freshen your breath. It smells like peach and cherry.”
