Our expat community thrives on connection, and here at Jingkids, we’re all about our readers, and what they need and want in order to maximize their time here in Beijing. Every Monday, we’re going to feature a prominent member of our expat community and get to know them a little bit better.
Today, we are proud to feature one of the members of the new Jingkids International Parent Board, which serves as a bridge between our publication and our dedicated readers.
Dave Hanssen is a born-and-raised Texan who has been living in Beijing since 2008. Around Beijing, he’s better known as Dave from Dave’s Studio. Established in 2013, Dave’s Studio has been the go-to choice for families and schools for professional photography. Dave is also the beloved photographer of Jingkids International, having shot many of our covers over the past eight years. When not behind the lens, Dave spends his free time with his two sons, and is a member of Beijing International Ice Hockey (BIIH).
What’s on your mind?
On my mind – well I hate to answer COVID … but it’s pretty much always on my mind since it started. I’m very happy Beijing is doing well and my kids are still able to attend school everyday. However, I’m stressed as a business owner that has clients in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Nanjing, and other locations that have to delay work as they are currently doing online school.
What’s your motivation to get up every morning?
For me, motivation and inspiration are the same. As an artist, I’m inspired by things I see and people I meet everyday. As a business owner, I’m motivated by the basics of keeping my staff paid and our quality of work as high and consistent as possible, and I’m inspired and motivated to see my company grow.
How do you stay sane in all the madness?
I’m definitely in a COVID-induced fatigue slump. Maybe you could even say COVID-induced PTSD! There are a few things that help keep me sane and lower my overall stress, such as bike rides, tossing the frisbee with my kids, ice hockey with BIIH, and a good old fashioned drink at the end of another long day, topped off with a healthy dose of a regular workout routine.
What’s your favorite thing about Beijing?
I’ve just got to say that my favorite thing about Beijing is that it’s constantly changing. I’ve lived here almost 15 years, and it still feels as fresh as when I first landed.
