Universal Beijing Resorts closed its Transformer-themed roller coaster this week after a tourist visiting the attraction collapsed and eventually died of a heart attack, according to an official statement.
The park reported through their official WeChat account that earlier this week a visitor required medical attention at the area surrounding one of their signature attractions, the Decepticoaster. The report did not say whether the person had taken the ride before or during the incident, instead stating only that the person was “in the area of the Decepticoaster.”
The statement reported that first-aid measures were administered immediately and transportation to the hospital was arranged. However, the park was later notified that the visitor had been pronounced dead at the hospital.
Universal included the following message in their official announcement: “Due to careful consideration and the need to cooperate with the relevant authorities for verification, the ride equipment has been temporarily shut down. After thorough verification, the equipment was designed to function properly and meet safety standards. We will resume operations of the device as soon as possible.”
Universal Resort Beijing remains open but the Decepticoaster will remain closed until further notice.
This is not the first time Decepticoaster has been in the news. Global Times reported back in September that some visitors complained about cervical pain after riding the coaster. In the report, a medical expert was quoted as saying the coaster could cause cervical spine injuries due to its “excessive speed”.
The following month the Decepicoaster malfunctioned causing 30 guests to be trapped on the ride for about 10 minutes.
