When you’re a kid, there’s nothing more exciting than waiting to slip into your weeks-in-advance purchased/rented Halloween costume and get ready for sugar overload. With spooky festivities in the Chinese capital just around the corner, there are only a few days left to have the last fittings and maybe run to the nearest store to get a prop or two. But if you’ve been too busy or it just slipped your mind to get things ready for this year, there’s still a chance you’ll find something last-minute in one of the costume shops.
But if there’s nothing you like or it’s just not a right fit, here are three ideas for DIY costumes that you can put together with basic supplies and a pinch of creativity:
- Scuba diver – It only takes a few RMB and stuff you already have at home to make this cool Halloween costume for your kid (or yourself!). Here’s what you’ll need:
- Two empty 2L soda bottles
- Black electrical tape
- Black clothing
- Rope or cord
- Goggles or a scuba mask (Decathlon always has them)
- Spray paint works best, but you can use any paint you have on hand
- Duct tape
- Hot glue gun
Remove the labels from the plastic bottles and spray paint them with the color of your choice (silver looks best). Let them dry, and wrap them together with duct tape. Get the black electrical tape and wrap it around each bottle so they get the “scuba tank look”. Next, use the hot glue gun to glue the rope to the top and bottom of the bottles. And that’s it! Add the goggles and any other scuba accessories you want and ta-da! Your scuba diver costume is ready.
- DOTS Candy costume – This costume is so easy to make and you only need a few things for it. You will need:
- 18 small plastic containers
- Yellow, pink and blue paint
- A white dress or apron
- Fabric glue or hot glue gun
Start by painting your plastic containers, six in each color and let them dry completely. Next, use a hot glue gun or glue to attach the containers to the dress or apron. Make sure you arrange them into the DOT candy pattern.
- Mickey Mouse – Loved by parents, grandparents and kids, Mickey Mouse has been around for decades, making us smile as soon as we recognize this friendly mouse dressed into red shorts and yellow sneakers. So why not pretend to be him for a day? All you need for your Mickey Mouse costume is:
- Red shorts
- Yellow sneakers or sneakers and yellow paint
- Black shirts and tights
- White and black felt (or any other fabric you have available)
- Headband
- White gloves
Cut out two circles of white fabric and glue them on the red shorts. Use stiff black felt to create ears and attach them to the headband. You can use a hot glue gun to do this. Next, get your little Mickey dressed into black tights and shirt, red shorts and yellow sneakers. Put the headband on, and don’t forget the white gloves. Complete the Disney look by drawing a tiny black circle on your nose.
