International Women’s Day, celebrated on Mar 8, is a time to honor and acknowledge the achievements of women globally. While many businesses express their support for women by offering discounts and promotions, it’s crucial to recognize that these gestures can sometimes reinforce stereotypes rather than empower women. A half-off drink promotion or a free dessert is great and all, but as a woman, I would rather have equal pay become a norm and harassment and sexist social expectations eliminated.
International Women’s Day has a rich history rooted in the fight for women’s rights and gender equality. It serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work still needed to create a more inclusive world. While it’s commendable that businesses want to participate, offering discounts on stereotypically feminine items, such as pink drinks, may inadvertently perpetuate gender norms.
Promotions that focus on aesthetics rather than substance can undermine the true purpose of International Women’s Day. Instead of reinforcing outdated notions, businesses can take this opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements, promote gender-inclusive spaces, and advocate for meaningful change. Engaging in educational initiatives or supporting women-led events can be more impactful ways for businesses to contribute positively.
As we commemorate International Women’s Day, let’s move beyond superficial gestures and work towards creating a society where women are celebrated and respected every day. Businesses can play a vital role in fostering genuine empowerment by promoting inclusivity, challenging stereotypes, and actively supporting initiatives that contribute to the advancement of women. It’s time to shift the focus from pink drinks to meaningful actions that make a lasting impact on gender equality.
So, let’s take this opportunity to highlight a few International Women’s Day events happening in Beijing with the right message.
