In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that the mental health of our teenagers is at risk. Social media addiction, violence, bullying and substance abuse are just a few of the biggest issues causing mental health concerns in those between the ages of 13 and 19. Suicide rates in the United States rose as much as 62 percent from 2007 to 2021, and continue to be underreported in many countries due to social stigma and cultural as well as legal concerns. But it is no mystery to us all that our youth are facing greater challenges in maintaining mental wellness.
This is why a need has arisen for more people like Juan Carlos Duran, a certified life coach who has been through some dark times in his own personal life, to offer support and assistance. Among other life coaching courses he conducts, he offers a teen-focused online workshop which is aptly named SereniTeen. Jingkids International finds out more.
JKI: Hello, Juan! Please tell us more about yourself.
Juan: Hi, I am a certified Purpose & Team Coach. After successfully overcoming my alcohol addiction, I had a profound realization that life is not just about existing, but rather about creating a meaningful impact and elevating the lives of others. I integrate mindfulness and coaching techniques to help individuals connect more deeply with their purpose. Through various channels such as social media, coaching programs, workshops, and social impact initiatives, my work has positively impacted many lives. Having lived in Beijing for 17 years, initially as a student, I fell in love with this country and its culture, which inspired me to stay and continue my work here.
JKI: Why do you work with teenagers in particular for life coaching?
Juan: I have had the privilege of working with teenagers in various international schools and universities, both in Beijing and Colombia. My main focus during these sessions is to share my personal experience of struggling with alcohol addiction and how I managed to overcome it. Recently, different mothers approached me for guidance regarding their children’s stress and anxiety levels during exams. After working with them and gaining insight into their struggles, and connecting with my own teenage years where alcohol, pressure to excel academically, and family challenges were prevalent, I felt motivated to create a program to support teenagers who are dealing with similar issues.
JKI: Briefly, please share with us what one can expect in the SereniTeen coaching workshop?
Duran: The SereniTeen coaching workshop is a 4-week online program designed to support teenagers in navigating the challenges they face. Participants will engage in guided mindfulness practices and coaching sessions to learn techniques to implement in their daily lives, reducing stress, boosting self-confidence, and fostering emotional well-being and resilience. The program covers topics such as mindfulness techniques, emotional regulation, resilience building, and personalized coaching support to address individual concerns and enhance the implementation of mindfulness practices in daily life.
JKI: Who is this workshop best suited for?
Duran: The SereniTeen program is best suited for teenagers aged 13-19 who are experiencing academic pressure, peer pressure, and stress related to social and personal challenges. Whether they are struggling with self-confidence, emotional regulation, or navigating societal expectations, this program provides a supportive and empowering environment for teens to develop essential life skills and build a strong foundation for personal growth and well-being.
JKI: What outcomes can one hope for after attending the program?
Duran: After finishing the SereniTeen program, participants can expect to:
– Boost self-confidence: During this program, individuals will develop self-awareness and cultivate a positive self-image. This will enable them to face challenges confidently and with resilience.
– Stress reduction: Participants will learn mindfulness techniques to manage stress effectively. These techniques will promote emotional well-being and help maintain a balanced mindset.
– Reduced anxiety: By engaging in mindfulness practices and emotional regulation techniques, participants will learn strategies to reduce anxiety and develop a sense of calmness.
