Like many families who were outside of the country when China closed its borders, the Northcotts were stuck in Thailand, unable to return to their home in Beijing. Seven months, a whole lot of patience and a period of quarantine later, the long-term Beijingers finally made it back.
Murmurings of “is this a good idea?” were heard once schools began to release the knowns and unknowns about traveling outside of Beijing. But this situation shows us how quickly a simple trip can escalate into a quarantine situation should the location or anywhere you travel through become a mid to high-risk area while you’re there.
We’d spent a good bit of time explaining to our kids, especially our youngest, why we couldn’t be there. Our 4-year-old didn’t quite understand what a live stream is, so we told them it’s like we have a private YouTube channel that’s just for the parents of their classmates.
Honestly, at first, I didn’t think it would become a global pandemic. I thought it would be something that was contained in Wuhan and disappear a few weeks later. When it became clear COVID-19 was much, much more serious, I pretty much didn’t go outside anymore. I didn’t really know how to react because you don’t know who has it or how it was even spread back then.
You knew you shouldn’t travel outside of China, but even if an area isn’t high risk, now, it could cause problems upon your return.
